A fair comment

On the news this morning: the (bloody ugly) statue of Donald Dewar which stands at the top of Buchanan Street in front of the Concert Hall is being returned today after its two-month refurbishment. Since it was erected, it’s been the target for some minor vandalism, principally damaging the glasses. To prevent this happening again, the statue will now be stuck on top of a two-metre plinth.

However, on the day it was removed from Buchanan Street a couple of months ago, there were those with a different take on what was going to be done. As I was hurrying down from Sauchiehall Street, I noticed the work going on to take it down, and the wee clutch of people watching it. I distinctly heard one bachle say, “Maybe they’re taking him away to put a smile on his face.”

I actually quite like that statue...

I'm dead against breaking the glasses, but if the glasses can't handle a traffic cone being put on the statue's head, then it's been designed broken. :op

It wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't such a revolting shade of green. :)

My view exactly.

Well, that's copper for you.

Although that then raises the question of why they used copper...

Yes; I suppose we should be grateful it isn't just plastic or somesuch painted to look like that (as is the case with a wee dome on a building on the South Side put up a few years ago).

I've heard the statue described as "you know, the one of the old drunk with broken glasses" - most unfair!

Possibly unfair WRT Dewar, but it sounds a pretty good description of the statue. :)

Perhaps they ought to ask whoever did the staue of Fenner Brockway about glasses. This statue, which stands in Red Lion Square, London shows the subject wearing glasses. Now, when it was knocked over by a falling tree in the gales of '87 it *still* had the specs intact, despite lying on the ground, an arm pointing skyward from behind the trunk of the felled Plane tree.
