Life On Mars - WTF?

This is a bit of reflection on the panel of that title at Eastercon, not an in-depth thing about the episode, but even so, if you haven't seen it you probably want to skip this.

On Friday night, I was on a panel entitled Life On Mars - WTF? (which I said was pretty much my reaction to the series from the start; in a good way, I hasten to add). Interesting to see how many of the notions which were aired on Friday night. Peter Harrow must have had a broad smile on his face (and quite right, too!) at the mention of brain tumour; I got some blank looks when I mentioned the references to The Wizard of Oz, but tonight they went from subtle to in your face; whoever it was who suggested that Sam was an undercover officer from Hyde, well done; and whoever it was (was it Wendy Bradley?) who suggested Sam really was from 1973 and the future stuff was a result of whatever accident occurred in episode one of series one should have a drink of self-congratulation. Probably, anyway... The last thing, almost, I said on Friday was that however it ended, I hoped it would end without destroying the ambiguity the series has maintained about Sam's state since the beginning in a crass and unsatisfying manner. I think they pulled it off. [livejournal.com profile] major_clanger asked us at the end if we expected to be satisfied or disappointed at the end of the final episode. I think I am pretty satisfied, and I do like that not all the is were dotted.

Verily it did rock. And I am one very satisfied with ending fan. Which I was just a little concerned I wouldn't be.

Yes, you weren't the only one. Simon's last question was would we be saying Yes! or Hmmph! at the end of the episode. Two of us on the panel thought Yes!, the other Hmmph! I think Wendy and I were right. :)

(I think I said that I had my concerns, but on their form so far I thought the production team could pull it off.)

Good to see you are alive and (I assume) well. See you both at Trout?

We certainly both intend being along. Zan might just be there to eat, but I'm usually up for a beverage.

Really? I missed that... ;o)

Be good to see you both.

LJ-cut tags ... did you mean to leave the whole entry showing except for that little bit of text in the cut tag saying "don't read the following"? If so, then that worked :-)

however if, as I think, you meant to hide the rest, then you either need to leave off the </lj-cut> or put it at the end of the text you want to hide.

Great seeing you, thanks for being there.

I really bolloxed that up, didn't I? I said I was tired...

Fantastic to see you, too; and I am glad I was there. You and Fran did a great job. Looking forward to next year already!

*very deliberately not reading post as I haven't got round to watching any Life on Mars yet*

Just waving hello. No idea whether you remember me, but I was one of many redheads at Eastercon ;-)

Of course I remember you, although we didn't speak much. It helps that you were sitting in Ops when I arrived on Friday morning. I was one of the big, beardy guys. I think there were one or two of us. ;o)

Oh, all right. I was Gopher Mum.

I caught the finale last night ...

... and I think that Life on Mars can stand alongside some of the best archive cult TV stuff the BBC ever put out back in the 1970s proper.

There is no doubt. It's a cult series. It deserves to be called such. I dread to think of the slashfic that's going to come from it being so known, though ... Oi! No sniggering in the back there! Shut it!

I think there is plenty of slashfic out there already. *shudders*

I think I said (I hope I said!) on Friday that I think Life On Mars is one of the best things we have seen on TV in recent years; it certainly can bear comparison with classic cult series, both the BBC's and the offerings of ITC.
