Still at the library. With two rounds of assistance from someone who understands this stuff, I finally managed to post last Monday's verse today using a borrowed memory stick.

Runner beans

I only used to eat runner beans when cooked, but many years ago now, I observed my mother-in-law's tortoise eating raw runner beans with great enthusiasm.   So I tried one and found that I liked it.

Oswin does too.  Really likes them.  Can eat several in a day.

Today, she was eating a slice of cake.  Grandad came in with fresh supply of runner beans from the allotment and gave her half of a runner bean.

She took it with great delight, ate it at once, and only then went back to the cake.

I love a three year old who appreciates allotment veg!

(At the library again.) The summer trees are all in bloom - clouds of pink and white, with little birds flitting among them.

I saw the mostly white cat again, so he/she hasn't moved after all. But the main consumer(s) of the catfood on the porch now seems to be one or more tabbies; I'm not sure whether the brown tabby and the silver tabby are the same cat, but one is apparently living under the bush by the front steps. So we may have a barn cat again.

At the library again.

I'm pleased to glimpse that one of the local houses that sold recently has had the line of ratty sheltered parking spaces at the rear replaced with an actual backyard. Lawn and stuff.

At the library again. The verse will be unavoidably late; I have it written but getting it here would involve a zip drive and negotiating the library wifi with my laptop.

Very hot. We nonetheless went and purchased groceries, including canned food for the new (used) dog. The car's external thermometer said 96, the thing under the garage eave said 104. I managed to get to sleep. The nearest house for sale had a large icecream truck parked in front of it, I suspect to try to attract visitors to the open house.

(At the library again.) The last box had been unpacked. It was a very busy night, but I managed to get all the Fleshlights on display where customers can see them. So at dawn I put a box out the back door ... badly startling a Himalayan cat who had been browsing the alleyway. I've seen him or her before, fleeing around the corner when I open the front door to check whether there is any traffic on El Camino. Regrettably, His or Her Floofy Highness cannot be lured into the store.

At the library again. This week's merchandise delivery is now down to one box, but I truly don't know where whatever's in that box is going to go. I worked wonders fitting in what I unpacked last night and some of what had been left hopelessly lying around behind the counter. Customers ... buy stuff!

I hiked to the high-tech shoe store to replace my high-tech innersoles. I could see the hills, but there was a peculiar blue-grey haze in the air. Unable to receive e-mails, I probably chose the one bad air day in the week for the exertion. However, feet are now good for another year.

I'm getting a lot of depressing books read. Subjects have included:

* America's history of rotten elections
* American college athletes raping women and being indulged in the habit
* An expert in dogs trying to figure out how humans can reawaken their sense of smell (actually I read that one in bed; it's soporific)
* The AIDS battle, revisited by a different gay journalist
* The downfall of the Wehrmacht in 1943; I may abandon this one
* Oh, and one of the Frank Miller Sin City graphic novels

Managed to get the verse posted by seizing the moment when we briefly had internet - and that was pretty much it. No internet since (and no chance to jump on at work). So I'm at the public library right now. I'll take a pic of the troll to mark the event.

Zuigerphobia

There's a word for everything these days.   Zuigerphobia is fear of vacuum cleaners.

Oswin has been staying with us while her mum is in hospital.  She's fine with that. She's used to staying with us and knows that Mummy and Mamma haven't abandoned her.

What sent her into mega distress was the vacuum cleaner.

I think it's the high-pitched sound. She's always been scared of them.  Even in another room it distresses her.  She was actually afraid to go shopping (to get away from it) because it might start again as soon as she left.

Richard has instructions to phone me just before he gets back, so that the vacuum cleaner will definitely not be there when she returns.

It's a tough world when you're only three.

PS.   She's been 'helping' pick fruit and veg on the allotment - and proving in the process that young children absolutely love raw runner beans and mangetout and redcurrants, blackcurrants, raspberries, etc. as long as they're introduced to them early enough.  She isn't too keen on radishes yet, but we're working on that by serving milder ones in small slices.

This was entirely unexpected

After seeing excitement on Twitter, I clicked on this article, "What football will look like in the future" out of curiosity. It is kind of what the label says on the tin (spoilers, yes there is football, in the future), but also completely unexpected in an awesome gripping way.

Even if you are not a fan of football (I'm not as I don't really understand the rules of the American version), do take the time to check it out. I didn't regret it, and I don't think you will either.
