The Pikachu cake was lemon flavoured. And it was delicious.

Today we went to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. It was quite impressive, although the little Wikipedia quiz/game was very silly.

Unfortunately the dog has once more done something nasty to her hindquarters. She visited the vet yesterday and we had to take her in early this morning for surgery. Poor little dog.

It did eventually get cooler, but we've visited several beaches and all caught the sun.

Last aspirin

This is the last of the aspirin I've been taking to prevent blood clots, which means I've been home for six weeks.

Next week I'm officially back at work, which will be another shock to the system.

I have family visiting this week, so I'm taking a vacation week. The gods have apparently decided to make things interesting: after the sudden early-morning wind storm, which apparently left meteorologists scrambling for an explanation, we had a full-blown thunderstorm with rain after I collapsed into bed yesterday, leaving my laundry on the line. It was still flickering when I crawled out of bed, so I was able to say hi to Redbeard. And I see they are now forecasting another hot day today and have switched the cooler days to starting on Wednesday. Clearly they are sticking pins in the map at random.

Morris first aid

We were dancing at Swanage Folk Festival this weekend and I had the usual use of our team first aid kit, a child with a scratched finger needing a plaster (it's hardly ever team members needing it).

However, not long after, a dancer twisted a foot mid-dance. He swapped out and tossed his stick to me and we finished the dance without missing a step. After the dance was over, I got out the emergency ice pack and a crepe bandage and applied both. By the afternoon (with the bandage re-applied) he was well enough to walk the procession, but sensible enough not to try stepping.

There are days when I'm very glad that I carry that kit around wherever we go.

(The item that I deliberately included in the kit, but hope never to have to use, is an eye pad. One has to be realistic about the risk of stick injuries when it comes to Border morris.)

Apart from having the right kit to treat the injury, the other big plus for me was that the dancer in question knew I could instantly replace him and we swapped without affecting the dance at all.  I
work hard to learn every position in every dance (which is not to say that I never make mistakes) and it means that I can fill in almost  anywhere.  Some dancers only ever learn a single position.  They'll dance second in line on the left in dance A and in position 3 in dance B and so on.

I tend to visualise dances from an overhead viewpoint, so I see the overall pattern and that means I remember "First corners cross" rather than "I swap places with Henry". I've also been dancing for most of my life, so half the patterns are second nature anyway.

So I went and cast my vote yesterday which is the first day of Advance Voting. And in the process gained even more empathy for those with mobility difficulties.

I found a conveniently nearby location for me from the map of Advance Voting locations:
Auckland University,
AUSA Club Space,
The Quad,
Alfred Street

So far, so simple. And then the adventures began.

16 years ago, around about now.

Tremendous wind came through starting just before my mandatory lunch break. It blew over the "reserved parking" sign in front of the store while I was eating. Seems to have died down now; I guess the Hunt has swept on to the East Coast.

On the spur of the moment, we took the slow drive down El Camino to The Milk Pail in Mountain View. (It's not really open air any more; it occupies a winding shack not unlike the permanent tent where I used to buy veggies in Hell's Kitchen; and it's not very European. What it is is very good.) The developers who put an apartment building where the Bevmo and clothing store used to be refused to make up for the loss of the parking the store used to rent, and what parking lot it has is all set about with construction work; there's a long, winding wheelchair ramp serving as the only access to the store. The parking lot was like a game of Tetris, and the store a controlled madhouse; people continue to determinedly shop there. We scored tiny black grapes, cheese, bread, frozen pasta for the housemate, mango and pepper sauce and fava beans for me ...

The dog left her stuffed squirrel in the middle of the path in the backyard last night. It is soggy from the dew; I've picked the grass seeds and clover burrs out of it but she still wants nothing to do with it.

Dancing Horses -the one I missed!

Yesterday at Swanage Folk Festival I was lucky enough to see one of the best dancing horses of all.  The Minehead Hobby Horse is one of a very rare breed (there's another one at Padstow, but that's about it).

It's a wild and energetic animal and it led the Swanage procession and I suspect the young man inside was totally exhausted by the end.  (I gather he had rope burns from all that energetic swinging)

Here's some footage of it from another occasion.  It's the Sailor's Horse from Minehead -which may help to explain why it looks as much like a boat as a horse, but it definitely has a tail!

The first touches of fall foliage on stressed trees, and I had to cut back a chunk of one of the remaining cotoneasters because the weight of the berries was bending it down into the driveway.

The new janitor took the keychain to San Francisco, but brought it back last night so now the mop water can be changed. (I know, I know ... )

My knee is metal(-ish)

I got to see my post-surgery knee x-rays for the first time. I figured they'd have needed to incorporate quite a bit of scaffolding to hold the pieces in place. After all, I managed to break my patella into five pieces. And yes, there it is.

The left picture is the front-on view, the right picture is the side-on view. (The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that the left view is upside down. I didn't realise until after I put the pictures together & I can't be arsed fixing it.) In the side-on view, a gap is still evident; the pieces haven't joined up properly yet.

But the good news is that I am now allowed to put weight on my left leg. That's really helped with mobility & overall self-confidence, but we're still in the early months of the recovery process. And overall it is "good news"; the healing is on-track.

It's crisp and cool today. So my window remains open. The dog has her jaw resting on the sill and her nose pushing at the screen. There is a squirrel on the fence.

I was in downtown Mountain View the other day. The aquarium store on a corner on Castro St. is now a gift and toy shop that has this in the window. Comes with 6 cats! Only 6?
